Lung cancer mortality attributable to residential radon exposure in Spain and its regions

چکیده

Lung cancer has the highest mortality rate in developed countries. The principal risk factor for lung is tobacco use, with residential radon being leading among never smokers and second ever smokers. We sought to estimate attributable exposure Spain its Autonomous Regions, correction dwelling height differentiation by use. applied a prevalence-based method estimating mortality. For estimations, we considered different Regions corrected height, using National Statistics Institute Housing Census prevalence of use (never smokers, ex-smokers). results showed that 3.8% (838 deaths) was over 100 Bq/m3, figure rises 6.9% (1,533 when not performed. By Region, population fractions, were obtained Galicia, Extremadura, Canary Islands, where 7.0, 6.9, 5.5% respectively exposure. greatest part occurred men ex-smokers. Residential major contributor mortality, though this contribution highly variable territories, indicating need targeted prevention policies. Correction estimates fundamental providing reliable radon-attributable

Exposure to residential radon and lung cancer in Spain: a population-based case-control study.

Although high radon concentrations have been linked to increased risk of lung cancer by both experimental studies and investigations of underground miners, epidemiologic studies of residential radon exposure display inconsistencies. The authors therefore decided to conduct a population-based case-control study in northwest Spain to determine the risk of lung cancer associated with exposure to r...

Residential radon-222 exposure and lung cancer: exposure assessment methodology.

Although occupational epidemiological studies and animal experimentation provide strong evidence that radon-222 (222Rn) progeny exposure causes lung cancer, residential epidemiological studies have not confirmed this association. Past residential epidemiological studies have yielded contradictory findings. Exposure misclassification has seriously compromised the ability of these studies to dete...

Residential radon exposure, histologic types, and lung cancer risk. A case-control study in Galicia, Spain.

BACKGROUND Lung cancer is an important public health problem, and tobacco is the main risk factor followed by residential radon exposure. Recommended exposure levels have been progressively lowered. Galicia, the study area, has high residential radon concentrations. We aim (i) to assess the risk of lung cancer linked to airborne residential radon exposure, (ii) to ascertain whether tobacco modi...

Re: "Residential radon gas exposure and lung cancer: the Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Study".

Exposure to high concentrations of radon progeny (radon) produces lung cancer in both underground miners and experimentally exposed laboratory animals. To determine the risk posed by residential radon exposure, the authors performed a population-based, case-control epidemiologic study in Iowa from 1993 to 1997. Subjects were female Iowa residents who had occupied their current home for at least...

p53 Mutations in lung cancer associated with residential radon exposure.

Unusual mutation patterns in lung tumors among underground miners have been indicated, suggesting radon-specific alterations in the genome, but the data are not consistent. To investigate the association between residential radon exposure and p53 mutations in lung tumors, we performed a study on cases from a nation-wide population-based investigation in Sweden. Our study included 83 nonsmoking ...
